At the Babes-Bolyai University of Cluj, American studies have developed as a unique field of academic teaching and research in Romania after 1990. They continue the inter-war tradition inaugurated by sociologist and Americanist Virgil Barbat and through the establishment of a department and a major in American studies (2004) the focus has been laid on American modernity and the consequences of modernization and democratization in American society.

The analysis of critical discourse, the defining and redefining of the cultural canon, the critique of the concept of power, the issue of identity within globalization and consumerism, the metamorphoses of the traditional liberalism and republicanism are the guidelines of the section.

The study of America addresses the present need of reflecting on the cultural and political history of the West, of modernity and modernization, on the consequences of the Enlightenment, modernism and postmodernism, and on relations between Europe and the Americas.
